“scrub_2” (2024) is a video-guided improvisation for any group of 4–16 performers with fixed digital recording. The piece subjects performers and electronics alike to the titular process—scrubbing—to generate an audio montage of abrupt contrasts. Though the score appears as a single image, scrubbing troubles any linear interpretation; performers read in many directions and negotiate relationships to the shifting image, electronics, other performers, and their own past interpretations. Conventional sound studies wisdom suggests that recordings give rise to sound objects whose repeatability makes them discrete objects of study. While the apparently fixed image of a score also encourages us to imagine the fixity and temporal linearity of sound, scrub_2 continuously reveals new parameters of sound, image, and performance. The more the piece reveals its limited materials, the less finite they become.
