Much of the material in this piece is derived from spectral analyses of the flamingo flock at the Nashville Zoo. Frequencies from these sounds are paired with virtual fundamentals in the cello range. Additionally the piece explores the balance of aleatory and control. Each performer’s part is comprised of three “Areas” and an ending section. The three areas may be played in any order. The performers are invited to sit back-to-back to enhance their active listening to one another. The two parts add up to precisely the same duration, but the performers need not worry about temporal coordination.

Premiered by Roberta Michel (flute) and John Popham (cello) of the Ecce Ensemble at the Etchings Festival in Auvillar France, 2018.
